About the program

Welcome to the Michigan Clean Marina Program! The Clean Marina Program is a non-regulatory program that promotes and celebrates voluntary adoption of measures to prevent and reduce pollution from marinas and the recreational boating community. Your pledge commitment is the first step to being a certified Clean Marina and an exemplary environmental steward of the Great Lakes and inland waters.

In 2019, the Michigan Clean Marina Program (MCMP) streamlined several aspects of the certification process. A major accomplishment by the MCMP is the creation of a new Michigan Clean Marina certification checklist that includes: 1) current federal and state requirements for marina facilities and operations, 2) new recommended best management practices, 3) a special topics section, and 4) a new online fillable format for both pledged and certified marinas.

The new certification checklist is organized by themes, which are identical to the education units in the online Clean Marina classroom. This new format allows marina owners and/or facility managers and staff to choose which best management practices (BMPs) of the Clean Marina Program they need to learn about before responding to the checklist questions. For example, the Stormwater Management theme in the checklist has questions that are associated with information and resources found within the Stormwater Management Unit of the online classroom. The themes, specific best management practices, and additional resources, labeled as such throughout the checklist are hyperlinked to a specific unit in the online classroom or an external resource. Current and future certified Clean Marinas (owners, facility managers, and staff) will have unlimited access to the Clean Marina Resource Guide; however, it is now considered an instructional tool that will be updated on occasion by the administrative staff of the Great Lakes Clean Marina Network.

The Michigan Clean Marina Program is intended as an educational tool for marina operators and owners for informational purposes only. The Clean Marina Resource Guide (formerly the Clean Marina Classroom), in-person trainings, and certification checklist are not intended to be, nor should they be construed as, legal advice. The Michigan Clean Marina Program and contributing agencies, organizations or individuals cannot guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the online resource guide or the checklist. The resource guide and checklist does not constitute a complete reference to state, federal, or local laws. Implementation of recommended BMPs may not ensure full compliance with the law. Participation in the Michigan Clean Marina Program is voluntary and the online resource guide and checklist do not create rights or duties that are enforceable in a court of law.
